I don’t know exactly how I would have responded to this piece if I’d read it before having kids, but that last part was very touching. Thanks for writing.

I had your breakdancing experience with mountain biking, but unfortunately I was 32 (33 now) when I discovered it. Still having a great time, still want to learn one day how to do backflips and 360s and stuff, but I have to say I regret it took me so long.

I think almost nothing complex can be illustrated simply. That has never stopped anyone from trying. Nor are we humans terribly adept at gauging how anyone will react to whatever we attempt to illustrate, and the reaction you will get will vary by conditions as simple as mood.

You don’t yet have kids but say “when I have” children, are you married? Because that dynamic becomes ever so much more complex when people are beholden to each other. And what you say and the way you say it, can both save and starve.
