I'm not sure how you look at Elon's track record and think "I should be skeptical". Is there lots of hype? Yes. Is his track record 100%? No.
But Tesla and SpaceX are hugely successful businesses in two of the most capex intensive, worst industries known to man, that succeeded because they have been able to solve dozens of technical challenges others deemed impossible. His track record is not mixed, it's probably the single most impressive track record out there.
