Thanks for writing this - I share your sentiment. It seems like Trump and Vance are trying to revive realpolitik with this mineral deal and the ‘America takes Gaza’ fiasco. On paper, breaking traditional statecraft rules to end unnecessary bloodshed sooner rather than later could be a positive shift, but this Oval Office stunt was executed with exceptional poor taste.
Poor Zelensky has been at war for nearly four years. His war beard says it all—and he clearly wants a stable peace. His reservations about negotiating with Russia are valid, but so is the argument for a deal. Both can be true at once: and I don’t think Vance was ready to hear that.
“The only consolation prize is that we are nearing the end of the orgy, where the table scraps are going to be wolfed down but with less enthusiasm, as the beast slowly REMs into a food coma. Then, it is my hope, we will cut our way out of its belly.”
His approval is below 50% but above his former average. It’s fascinating, disappointing, and yet unsurprising to see his base react as if nothing wrong has happened.
